Mexico's strategy puzzle: thin air, fresh asphalt and three tyre choices
The C3, C4 and C5 compounds are confirmed for Mexico City. Cooling demands and an evolving surface add uncertainty to the weekend's strategy picture.
Pirelli's compound selection for the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix is confirmed: C3 is the hard tyre, C4 the medium and C5 the soft. Formula1.com's October 28 tyre preview also identifies extensive resurfacing as a central variable for the weekend.
The surface is a question, not an answer
The reported work covers the run from Turn 16 to Turn 1 and the stretch from Turn 7 to Turn 16. New asphalt can offer different grip and roughness, but Pirelli stresses the need to assess its actual behaviour in the opening sessions. The track's tendency to gain grip over a weekend makes early comparisons especially sensitive to when a lap was set.
Pirelli suggests the circuit's relatively low tyre demands could favour a one-stop race, while leaving room for the soft to contribute beyond qualifying. That remains a forecast: the selection of compounds does not confirm a race strategy, and the observations made on track will matter.
Cooling changes the performance trade-off
The circuit sits around 2,250 metres above sea level. Formula1.com's technical preview explains that the thinner air reduces both aerodynamic load and cooling capacity. Teams must protect brakes and the power unit while limiting the drag penalty from opening up the car for more airflow.
Williams' strategy contribution to that preview also connects cooling choices to expected traffic. Following another car can make temperature management harder, so planning is about more than comparing a driver's clean-air pace with rivals.
What we will watch
UPDATE FORMULA's analytical focus is the relationship between tyre consistency, traffic and track evolution. A quick single lap will answer only part of that question. Repeatable runs and the ability to stay close to another car should offer a more useful basis for judging which strategies are realistic.
